In Colobane, people expect the return of Linguère Ramatou, a former local girl now rumored to be richer than the World Bank. But her generosity has its conditions: she offers a check of ten billion for the death of Dramaan Drameh who refused to admit that he was the father of her child 30 years ago. “Life made made me a whore, now I'm turning the world into a brothel” she tells the citizens of Colobane.

Es erscheint schon fast wie eine intellektuelle Herausforderung, wenn Djibril Diop Mambety Dürrenmatts "Besuch der alten Dame" in die Sahelzone verlegt. Denn es ist durchaus bemerkenswert, wie aus dem absurden Theaterstück, ohne dass es aufdringlich wirken würde, eine fröhliche Parabel über die Verlockungen des Kolonialismus wird. Nicht das Geld der alten Dame ist es, was die Honoratioren des verarmten dorfes ihre Prinzipien vergessen läßt, es sind die Luxusgüter der Ersten Welt, die die Bewohner der Dritten zu Hyänen macht. "Hyènes" ist denn auch der treffende und durchaus selbstkritische Titel dieses schönen Films.

Der Film bleibt oft am Dialogischen und Theaterhaften kleben und schmälert durch Vereinfachungen und Kürzungen die Psychologisierung der Personen und die Skurrilität der Geschichte.

Each film by Djibril Diop Mambéty is about the nuisance of money. With relish he describes the feverish greed of the inhabitants. Linguère offers credits wherever she goes, turning Colobane into a madhouse. A strategy reminiscent of the IMF (International Monetary Fund), but with Djibril Diop Mambéty, the criticism is always coupled with roaring laughter.
