Fernando Birri is known as the «Father of the New Latin American Cinema». Born in Santa Fé (Argentina) he studied film in Italy at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome and returned to Santa Fe in Argentina, where he founded the first film school specialized in documentary in Latin America. He cofounded also the Cuban Film School in San Antonio de los Baños in 1986, where he worked as the first principle. Birri was forced to exile due to military coup and lived in Italy also after Argentina found back to democraty.
