Der durchgängig gesungene Film vermengt verschiedene Erzähl- und Kunstformen: die Gamelan-Oper, traditionelle javanesische Gesänge und javanesischen Tanz, zeitgenössische Choreografien, dazu Rauminstallationen, die einer Documenta oder einer Kunstbiennale würdig wären (tatsächlich stellten an der Filmproduktion beteiligte Künstler schon in Venedig aus).... Nugroho has shifted the context to a peasant village, with Ludiro standing in for rapacious businessmen (a workers' uprising is percolating in the background), though in truth his extravagant courtship smacks of amour fou. With its erotic choreography, saturated colours and rhapsodic, surreal folk imagery the film might be compared to Powell and Pressburger or the kind of musical Paradjanov might have made in these circumstances.»
